SCULPTING THE HELMET

SCULPTING THE HELMET

Drawing curved shapes in perspective is always a tricky one for comic book artists. I mean, we manage it fine but it’s always useful to have some reference, and if possible at exactly the right angle. A number of Comic artists use Sketchup for basic modelling so I thought I would give it a go. It’s a great package but really tricky getting started, especially for curves. Anyway, here is my attempt at the helmet. It is going to be really useful as I make my way through the remaining issues.

RED LAUNCH

RED LAUNCH

OXYGEN Episode One: RED is now available
Check out the ONLINE COMIC at https://tinyurl.com/yaf8bgoc to see a part preview the book and to view the complete issue online for just £2
There will also be a print issue available at some point in the coming months depending on other commitments.

It has been a long journey to get to this point and a lot of hard thinking, writing, and drawing. As was the case with HORIZON, this seven-part series takes the reader on a journey with a character that will not only grip but with all its hidden clues it will also enable insights for the reader. After the reception that HORIZON had I now know that this narrative technique works and it is something that I will be expanding on in future projects.

‘A fascinating and thrilling journey through the psyche, simultaneously thoughtful and kinetic’  Dave Gibbons – Watchmen artist
‘An intriguing book that tells a great story in four wonderful dimensions: words, pictures, speech and space’ Will Gompertz. BBC Arts Editor
‘Very beautiful indeed’ Alain de Botton – Philosopher, Author, Broadcaster

To support the development of the OXYGEN project and to get your name in the book and a free copy, check out the Patreon Page where you can keep up with the developing art, story ideas and background spoilers etc.

Episode One: RED

Episode One: RED

EPISODE ONEcover_lowDue to the lockdown over the Coronavirus I found myself with more time than usual. this means that all the art, colouring, lettering and design for the first issue is complete. There will be an initial digital launch where you can read the issue online followed by a printed launch at some point soon. To keep up with the news about RED and all the info and behind the scenes news about the whole seven part project visit patreon.com/andrewwildman Many posts are free to view with just some of the more ‘secret’ stuff being for paying patrons for a very small fee. All support will help make this project happen and is very much appreciated 🙂

The Opening Page

A few tiny tweaks to do but this is essentially the opening page of Episode One. There will be names etc added to the books and CDs. I am using the WILDWORDS font, which is what I used on HORIZON. There will be a different font for other speakers but for the internal dialogue and spoken words by our protagonist the will be in the tried and tested font by Comicraft .

There is a lot of symbolism in these opening pages before we get into the full-on stuff. I will give you some spoilers in another post when we are a bit further along, but for now, feel free to comment but please don’t share. This is for your eyes only 😉

How to plan a comic

One of the things that I often find tricky to keep track of is when parts of the book need to get done and how to set deadlines and basically keep track of the whole process. The first deadline I have is the 24th of July for the London Film and Comic-Con. I want to make sure that I have at least issue one ready for the convention. Ok, so the con might not go ahead – what with the virus and everything – but either way, it’s always good to have a deadline to work to. The second deadline is the Thought Bubble convention in November. Being someone who works in tv production now I thought I would do what they always do for a production and put a Gantt chart together. I found a great app to do it that means that if one thing changes I can see how it effects everything else. If that then has an impact on the print deadline I can then see where I need to double the effort to have it still work. So… the theory is good, let’s see if it works 😉 Colour on book one almost done so we are still on track.

Stay safe, Andrew x
